Thoughtful Thursday - a post idea by u/davidgillilandfan38 for all fans to ask whatever NASCAR-related question they want answered in hopes to get an explanation for something they've been unsure of. No question is too stupid! Want to know why the cars drive left around ovals instead of right or why the cars don't have headlights (they're just stickers!)? Or maybe you want to know something more technical that someone with more experience might know? This thread is for you! Ask below!

Thinking about how great this year's duels are gonna be with 4 DNQs got me thinking... if a sponsored car DNQs, does the sponsor have to pay despite not making the race? And if they do have the pay, do they get a discount because they obviously didn't make the race?

As far as I know, the answer is yes. But that's is the risk a sponsor takes when they invest in a team without a guaranteed spot in the race - the tradeoff is a significantly lower investment for the same sponsorship opportunity.

To teams, being able to sell a sponsorship to a car that was guaranteed to race was one of the driving factors behind the "Top 35" rule, and now the Charter system.

Would an immediate change from a splitter to a valence be difficult. Like how quickly they changed from the wing to the spoiler once they realized the wing helped the cars liftoff

I’m going to start this off with a caveat. I’m not an engineer and I’m not on team valence. I am a huge race fan, and we race cars that have recently had a nuclear arms race as far as aero is concerned (dirt late models and modifieds).

After the change from the wing, NASCAR has been very cautious when implementing new aero changes.

We’ve had several rounds of testing for almost any solution that was put into place.

I think wing back to spoiler was slightly different as teams had years of data from using a spoiler, and we don’t know how long NASCAR had been in discussion with teams before reverting back to the spoiler.

NASCAR was in a bad way to push that change through for safety, and it couldn’t really be bothered in worrying too much about competitive balance.

A change to using a valence would largely give the teams that can do in-house aero testing a massive competitive advantage.

We haven’t used a valence in a much longer time period than we went with the spoiler>wing>spoiler transition.

Further than that, taking away what little aero downforce that the splitter generates could be devastatingly bad for racing. Aero push is largely considered the issue that creates the bad racing now. Adding to the amount of aero push or aero understeer would likely do the exact opposite of what everyone wants.

If we’re going to make another aero change, it’s going to be thoroughly tested and implemented for Gen 7.

I’m really hoping we add front downforce to make the cars more efficient in dirty air/traffic. Planting the front of the car and limiting rear downforce should let the back end of the car slide around.

Modifieds in our area don’t use a rear spoiler and use rock hard tires to make it difficult to get power down. Late models have twisted bodies that seal to the track, have wider/softer tires, and don’t struggle for power. Both create good racing, they just go about it in different ways.

To build off your last point about good racing, what can create good racing in those series is inexperienced drivers. I once heard Brad K or Harvick (off the top of my head Im not 100% sure who said it but I believe it was Brad) say on an NBC podcast that’s why the truck series has good racing. A driver slips up and someone makes a pass (short version of the explanation). When you have the top drivers in cup hitting their marks every lap, it’s hard to make a pass. It’s like the super bowl this year. Both defenses played amazing but it was called a boring game. College defenses aren’t that good and they have high scoring games and what some might call “a better game”

I think that’s also a fair point. Less mistakes means less passing opportunities.

Removing the splitter wouldn't magically fix anything. 3400-pound bricks going 200mph are going to generate tons of turbulence regardless of the aero pieces they have on the car. It's a vicious circle: To combat turbulence, you add downforce. When you add downforce, you create more turbulence.

Even if you took away the splitter, you'd still have a huge car at high speeds creating tons of turbulence, and now you wouldn't have the splitter as a tool to balance the car in the dirty, turbulent air. And the cars are still sealed to the ground, which means you still have the same problems of digging into dirt when you hit it. And no matter what ride height rules you put in to keep cars from being sealed to the ground, engineers are going to find ways to get the body of the car to move at speed and settle into the most efficient space to generate the downforce that they need.

I wish the Daytona 500 featured more 1 off rides. Like we're seeing with RCR and Reddick. Teams bring in an extra car for an up and comer, or a veterans coming back for one race a year

Mid-Late 2018 Lowe's decided that they wanted to change their sports marketing efforts from NASCAR to the NFL. I guess they felt it was a better return on investment.

Besides their homes, are their any "safe spaces" for drivers to totally be themselves? Like if Kyle Busch was like "Imma be real with you, M&Ms are disgusting" he wouldn't get in trouble for it
