What if... we lose?

As rational people we must prepare for the worst and hope for the best, so I was thinking about it.

What if we lose? How badly it would get if the media starts pushing people out of video games? What will happen with politically incorrect games? Will japanese videogames get even fewer press?
What about us? What about people and communities on the pro-gamergate side? Will developers stop caring about us? Will our hobby become something we don't feel good to hold dear? Will our dream of experiencing an infinite amount of worlds and realities die?

Sadly, I don't have the answers, maybe you do. Maybe one of your ideas will help me to understand.

English is not my main language, I ask for forgiveness if there is an error and I will thank you if you help me fix it.

I'd rather take the game over.

We won't lose, but even if we did, we would eventually come back.

Gamers are dead, what is dead may never die....

level 3

A strange aeon, this is.

level 3

I've lost count but this is like the 4th time I've been declared dead and/or irrelevant by the press. One of these times it'll stick, but not this time ;)

Truth, time, and essentially unlimited funding, since we don't have to pay for trolls and other participants in secret projects.

level 3

We do it for free.

There is no realistic losing condition for us. The only way we lose is if each and every one of us decide to shut up and crawl back to their sites. And even then, the damage with advertisers is done. In order to lose, we would all have to stop caring about video games as a whole.

To put it succinctly, if we lose, the playing field gets nuked as we make our exit.

level 2

lmao and if that happens, the video game industry just lost a huge chunk of its business.

Imagine we get so big we encompass like, a quarter or even a half of the gamer market, which isn't incredibly unreasonable to expect as soon as the MSM starts either crumbling or reversing their narrative. At that point, if we win, the gaming media is destroyed, and if we lose, the entire game market crashes, taking the gaming media with it.

We get big enough, the game's over. Checkmate. Whether we win or lose, they go down.

There's no way we can..

We're too focused and our side is the right side..

This is the inevitable evolution of the media side of the gaming industry and when something evolves, something ends up becoming extinct..

What's happening right now is what happens everytime a new technology or way of doing things renders the existing tech or system useless...

Print media is still in it's death throes and only recently have they accepted that and instead of publishing articles vilifying "news on the internet", they've embraced it and created their own online presence..

With social media becoming more and more relevant, most people are getting their news from individuals instead of huge corporations.. The huge corporations remain relevant because the average individual lacks the necessary funds and focus to delve deep into a news-worthy topic..

With gaming, that doesn't apply.. There's rarely a gaming news story that requires the backing of a corporation to investigate and report on.. Nearly anyone with an interest in Games can pick out a game or gaming topic and do a far better job of reporting on it than most establish gaming news sites..

Gamers also have that special focus required to peel back every layer of a story and the apolitical attitude to not let personal politics soil their work..

Gaming media outlets, as they've existed for the past few decades, are dead.. And they know it..

We can't lose.

level 1

Losing is literally impossible. I'm not saying this as a motivation speech, I'm saying it because it's true.

Think of this as a war analogy. We all know an army marches on its stomache, and without basic food and supplies, an army will crumble. In terms of gamergate, it's not food we march on, but money. The thing is this is a war between journalists and their own readers. We as gamers and we as readers do not get paid to read or to play games. On the contrary, we pay them to play their games and in a roundabout way (via sponsors and advertisers whose presence asserts we do read and who disappear when we don't) we pay them to read their articles.

The fact of the matter is GamerGate supporters can survive without gaming journalism. This is absolute fact. Game journalists however cannot survive without us. We are their lifeblood. They lost the moment they decided to attack us. GamerGate is really more of a battle to have the world acknowledge the injustices of the system rather than purging them; from the beginning it was a sure-fire thing they'd be purged, it's just not sure how much recognition their poor practices will get in the long run and how much society (gaming society or larger pictures, depending how far this goes) will remember it and learn from it for the future.

Even IF they convince millions of people who have nothing to do with gaming and have no interest in gaming that gamers are scum and they are right, this will not promote their views in gaming. We dictate what games sell and what games don't with our wallets. Companies do not care about morality or opinions, they care about profit. So long as long as we buy games they deem misogynistic (as well as games they like, since we don't really care either way so long as gameplay is solid), such games will continue to be made. Convincing "customers" who never bought and played games anyways not to play games does nothing,

At worst you would think there would be a horrendously unlikely possibility that they could give gaming a negative stigma. This is unrealistic as gaming is now a staple of modern living and free time, and even so it seems clear these feminists are intent on changing gaming, so they themselves would not want it to die out or lose support. No, what they want is the glory of dictating what's in games, so the moment someone asked "should we boycott video games?" the answer would be "no just help us change it." This prevents gaming from ever walking away with a negative connotation because of this whole fiasco.

So in a nutshell....?

Our opponents are fucking idiots. They bit the hand that feeds them, and they are the ones who will starve for it. We can continue feeding ourselves, and thus this was won before it ever even began. If you're worried at all, it's just their pathetic propaganda biting at you. Extremely pathetic propaganda too in that they must be COMPLETELY in denial to think it would ever work, since even if they convince you it's possible for you to lose, it wouldn't actually make it true.

It's entirely possible we'll lose. The people saying we can't are trying to maintain morale, which is a sympathetic goal, but deluded--there's no justice in the world but that which we make, and that doesn't always work.

If we lose, this conflict will start again in the future. Lots of the same faces, new ones, some new trigger. But it'll happen again, and it will keep happening.

level 2
(◕‿◕✿)2 points · 4 years ago

If the conflict does happen again in the future, though, it'll be a weaker position from the gamer side of things, since the other side will be able to point to "The last failed misogynistic campaign" and have an even better smear position from the start.

level 3
Oh, snap!1 point · 4 years ago

That's a possibility. It might not go that way, and there will be a new trigger the new movement can use to vindicate itself and spark outrage. There will always be a war.
