Dude, market is not the same as when RNH signed that contract, not even remotely close.

That being said hes making more than Leon.... LOL

level 4

No doubt, Leon is a beauty but should be making $7 max, that means Stone will be paid over $2.5 mil more than he’s worth. Drai’s deal looked like garbage this season but I think it will be ok in a few more seasons.

do i even want to know how much salary they could have gotten off the books here? 6M from Kassian and Russell for sure, how much more than that?

Russell has a full NMC until July 1. What's the point of moving Kassian now? Get less of a return than you would in the summer and what, save Katz some bucks to end the season?

There is literally no point in shedding salary at this point in the year. All you do is create more holes and save the owner money.

Creating holes in the roster isn’t much of an issue an at all. You can just claim some guys off waivers to play in the bottom six or on the third pairing or whatever. I know the Oilers don’t want to mess with the Condors but that’s also not the only option.

We’re not going anywhere this season. Getting any sort of picks back at least gives the team some extra flexibility. Teams undervalue picks at the deadline so it’s generally a good time to sell off some players. We only have 6 picks each in the next two drafts.

I agree that Russell is easier to move in the summer. Kassian I wonder what his value was like, seeing as a quite a few teams could probably use him in the playoffs this year. Curious why you think he would cost less now.

It's probably fair on the Kassian point, I shouldn't have lumped them in with one another as they are in substantially different situations. I think with the Oilers current situation it's likely teams weren't offering a whole lot for Kass but that's obviously just speculation on my point.

level 3

On Russell, with Morrissey's injury the Jets are going to end up running at least two LD worse than him for over a month when both important seeding and (quite possibly) the opening playoff games will be played.

This is why they obtained Beaulieu and Kieselvich. I think from there it's impossible to deny Winnipeg's interest in obtaining LHD and I also think it's highly likely Winnipeg would be a team Russell would waive for.

On Kassian, those first two questions (and the rhetorical assertion contained in the second) are laughable and the third is embarrassing. Let's make them 1, 2, and 3.

  1. The point of moving Kassian now is very obviously because he's currently producing, therefore it would be selling high. The risk of selling high on hockey players (that they may have actually reached a higher platform on merit and will continue to be the 'high' version of themselves) isn't present with this player because he's 28 and we know that his inputs and his outputs vary wildly. In other words: He's streaky. We also know that the organisation acts in ignorance of both of these things.

  2. Even if Kassian wasn't experiencing a production boom, he would still have more value now then he would in the summer because of his playoff history, player-identity, and the undeniable fact that draft picks are worth less, and players more, at the deadline; and that vice-versa is true at the draft. More teams are able to take on more salary in the summer , but there's also more players available, and teams overrate picks while the draft is happening due to the immediacy of prospect availability.

  3. Save Katz some bucks to end the season? Shedding salary at this point in the year? These players have salaries that go beyond this season and this is about cap-hit and not dollars. Literally embarrassing. You know these things. If you're going to make snarky rhetorical questions, clean up the actual statements to be actually truthful and relevant.

Basically the only coherent thing you could be trying to put forth there is that if you deal Kassian and Russell you have to replace them with equal salaried players.

In which case, you're assuming that both players are full value for their contracts with I think is unequivocally false - and so we disagree fundamentally on this issue in such a way that there's nothing to talk about. You can get more than these players are going to give us next year for equal or less than 5.9M.

I wasn't being snarky I was genuinely asking you a question. If you want to be a little prick about it then I'm about done here.

The only thing I will say is both the players the Jets got are expiring deals. Why the fuck would Winnipeg be interested in Russell when they are about to enter a tighter cap crunch? Hint: they fucking wouldn't. I posed a question as to why you thought they should have been moved, and you decided to be a prick, but ya I'm the one that's both laughable and embarassing.

level 5

the jets have three regular d signed for next year and one past 2019-20, and i'm amused but not surprised with both that you don't know that I said the questions were laughable and embarrassing - not the asker - and that you honestly think that they weren't completely snide; you saying "I wasn't being snarky" when that's objectively how it's read doesn't mean anything. you can say you tried not to be snarky but not that you weren't

that would be like me saying that I wasn't being a prick in my response, that doesn't mean that I wasn't being a prick

Soo disappointing to have given up assets for UFA’s just a few months ago, and then have those same UFA’s have zero value at the deadline.

What UFAs did we trade for?

We gave up a conditional 6th for Wideman so that was pretty much nothing

level 5
97 MCDAVID6 points · 2 months ago

And then a 3rd for petro. Something > nothing.

Rather do nothing then buy for a non existant run. Wouldn't mind trying to re-sign Chiasson either

His inconsistency should keep that extension to a minimum. Every player who sees success playing on McDaddy's wing shouldn't be making the argument of look at how many goals they scored, they deserve to be overpaid.

If they could simply extend his current contract by a year or two that'd be a heck of a deal IMO.

level 1

Well seems like management is just gonna dump everything off to the next GM during the summer.

It's Oilers tradition for incumbent GMs to inherit a mess.

My biggest disappointment was the Jets getting Hendricks back for a 7th... I miss that man.

level 2
99 GRETZKY2 points · 2 months ago

Did they really reacquire Hendricks from Minnesota? I thought he wanted to retire there.

level 2
97 MCDAVID3 points · 2 months ago

At least he'll make it past the first round with Winnipeg.

Disappointed we didn't make any moves, but without knowing what was out there it's hard to be angry. Rumours were real lacking.

Really thought we could get at least a 5th or 6th for Petro.

Keith Gretzky on TV just now "We've played well lately, we're still in the hunt" 🤣

level 2

I rather not have the GM come on tv and say we suck and are hopeless, wouldn't send a good message to the team.
